FC Bayern München have announced new appointments to their backroom staff. Miroslav Klose (41) will be head coach Hansi Flick’s new assistant coach from 1 July 2020. The former Germany striker’s contract will run until 30 June 2021. Furthermore, 31-year-old Danny Röhl’s contract as assistant coach will be extended to 30 June 2023.

FC Bayern München CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “We are very happy that Miro has decided to take this step from the FC Bayern Campus to the first team. He is the most successful German striker of the last 15 – 20 years. I am convinced that our strikers in particular will benefit from him being there as a coach. Miro was also Hansi Flick’s preferred candidate.”

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic: “I’m very happy Miro has chosen this path. He has coached the U17s for two years, with convincing results on the field, and he’s overseen the positive development of the team. I’m convinced Miro is a very good fit for Hansi Flick’s coaching team and can also become an important contact person for our players, with his experience and his footballing concepts. We’re also happy to have extended Danny Röhl’s contract to 2023 ahead of schedule. As Hansi Flick’s assistant, Danny has made a significant contribution to ensuring that our team once again play successful and attractive football”.

Miroslav Klose: “It feels very good, I’m very much looking forward to the task. Hansi Flick and I have known each other very well since our years together in the German national team. We trust each other, both professionally and personally. For me this is the next step in my career as a coach. I hope that I can use my experience to make an important contribution in helping FC Bayern achieve our sporting goals”.

Hansi Flick: “With his experience as a former professional at the highest international level, Miro is the perfect addition to our coaching team. We have known and appreciated each other for a very long time and were able to celebrate great successes together with the national team. The fact that Danny Röhl will stay with us for the long term is also great news for me and my team.”

Klose, 2014 World Cup winner and the leading World Cup goalscorer of all time, has coached the German record champions’ U17 juniors for the past two years and won the U17 Bundesliga South/Southwest regular season championship with his team in 2019. From June onwards, Klose will also attend the DFB Academy’s A-licence training course. The 41-year-old played for FC Bayern from 2007 to 2011.

Röhl moved from English Premier League club Southampton to FC Bayern in the summer of 2019. In England he was assistant to team manager Ralph Hasenhüttl, with whom he had previously worked at RB Leipzig.
