The Tönnies Arena witnessed a David vs Goliath encounter on Wednesday evening, when hosts FSV Gütersloh 2009 took on powerhouses VfL Wolfsburg in a DFB-Pokal der Frauen (German DFB Women’s Cup) quarterfinal match. Wolfsburg, the reigning FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga (FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga) and DFB-Pokal der Frauen champions, were the runaway favourites against the Women’s Bundesliga 2 side, who went into the cup game without any match practise after the COVID-19 break.

Gütersloh head coach Steffen Enge had to cope with the absence of  Shpresa Aradini, Marina Hermes, Pia Lange, Melissa Schulz, Janna Härtel and Isabelle Wolf. These six regular players were not able to go into the one-week long obligatory pre-match quarantine due to work commitments. The pre-match quarantine is an important part of the medicial concept created by the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) and DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga to resume the 2019/20 season despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lara Dickenmann (14′) opened the score sheet for Wolfsburg with a stunning shot from 20 metres. But the visitors had their problems with a well-organised and strong Gütersloh back line.

FSV Gütersloh managed to go into the half-time break with a narrow deficit and there were still hopes that the underdogs from the 2nd Divison could somehow manage a goal against Wolfsburg.

But Alexandra Popp (51′) and Dickenmann (62′) increased Wolfsburg’s in the early stages of the second half to seal a comfortable 3-0 win for the visitors.

VfL Wolfsburg will face 2nd Division side DSC Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal der Frauen semifinals next week.
