The first match of the GFA Inter College Women’s League was an interesting contest between St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa and S.S. Dempo College, Panaji played at the GFA Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

The match duration was 70 minutes (35 mins each half). The final score of 3-0 in favour of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa is not an indication of how the match proceedings went. The match was actually a closely contested one with both teams making equal efforts in scoring a goal.

Dempo College started off well and controlled the first half of play. Keena D’Souza and Anushka D’Souza combined well for Dempo College Panaji and a fine through pass by Anushka found Chetna Tirodkar who almost got the first goal in the 13th min of play only to be denied by a fine save by Xavier’s college goalkeeper Astrid Pereira.

Bethany Remedios was rock solid for Xavier’s College throughout the match and thwarted numerous moves made by Dempo College especially in the first half of play. For Dempo College, Keenda was the driving force and kept pushing her team forward.

The second half of play saw a completely different change of events with Xavier’s College getting a quick goal in the first minute of the second half with the boots of Desiree Pereira. The goal got the Xavier’s team on the offense mode and Valencia Rego got the 2nd goal for Xavier’s College within three minutes with a goal in the 38th minute to make the scoreline 2-0 in favour of Xavier’s College.

Stunned by two quick goals, Dempo College tried to regroup and slowly started making attempts to pull one goal back with Sybyl Fernandes and Minella Rodrigues moving the ball forward. The attempts to get a goal back started leaving gaps in the defence and Desiree Pereira capitalized on one counter attack move initiated by Luica Simoes and scored her 2nd goal in the 50th min of play for the Final Score of 3-0 in favour of St. Xavier’s College Mapusa.

The “Quadros Motors Player of the Match” award went to Bethany Remedios of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa.

The GFA Inter College Women’s League will continue on Tuesday as Chowgule College Margao face Rosary College Navelim at Chowgule College Ground, Margao at 8.30 IST.
