Germany keeper Manuel Neuer has been voted Germany’s “Footballer of the Year 2010/11” for his outstanding performances with his club FC Schalke 04 last season. Neuer, who joined German giants FC Bayern Munich this season, clinched the award with a total of 210 votes ahead of Mario Gomez (190 votes) and Nuri Sahin (142 votes).

“I’m surprised as it’s not common that a goalkeeper wins this award,” Neuer told German sports magazine KICKER. “It’s a great honour for me. I thought it’s just a joke, when I received the news.”

Neuer is only the sixth goalkeeper to win this prestigious award and he joins the likes of Oliver Kahn and Sepp Maier, who won the award since its introduction in 1960.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp has been voted “Coach of the Year 2010/11”, while Fatmire Bajramaj received the “Women’s Footballer of the Year 2010/11” award.
